Introduction

What is Stendhal?

stendhal is a multiplayer online adventures game inspired in Acorn with the 90's Zelda look. Your task is to talk with other people in the village and find jobs to do that will drive to interesting quests that will reveal the hidden plot behind the world of stendhal

In stendhal, you can also just walk around, chat with people, buy and sell items and kill some of them :) Some of these people are NPC, they will give you tasks to accomplish and hints to solve your quest.

stendhal is totally developed using Java and Java2D, so it is portable to anything running Java 1.5.0.

You must press the arrow long enough for the character to move. Your character will collide with elements that exists on the world, like other players and walls.

You also collides with map borders. When you reach a map border your screen won't move further and then can happen two things:

  • if an area exists to move from this zone to the new area, you will be traslated to the new area.
  • if no area exists nothing will happen and simply you will collide.

Signs may help you determining this.

When attacking someone or talking to someone it is a nice thing to face them, so press Ctrl and arrow to face in that direction. It is just a eye candy action as it has no effect on game rules.

Other actions

Use right mouse button over objects to see the contextual menu and use left mouse button to choose the action You can click outside to abort the contextual menu.

Exit

Press ESC to exit. You will be prompted again to either really quit or get back to game.

Open Game Dialog log

In case you closed the game dialog you can open it again with Ctrl+L

This dialog contains all the important events that happen in game so it is wise to have it visible.

Player comunication

To communicate with other players simply write. A chat bubble will appear under your character and a new line will appear on Game log dialog. This kind of communication is public and visible to every player in world, although you will see only text for players near you.

Alternatively you can write

 /tell player chat Content

To write to a single character anything you want. For example:

/tell miguel This game rules, really. I have rated it 10/10 :)

Characters

You can and must talk to other characters to get help and quest to complete.
There are several NPC on Stendhal. All of them reply to Hi, so greet them and ask them for help or quests.

Combat

Combat is a important way of getting new levels. You only get experience by killing, you can't train your skills like in other games.

To attack a creature simply left click on it and choose Attack. You will see that a red box appear almost inmediately around it. You need to be next to the target in order for attack to success. Your attack will continue until:

  • you stop it using "Stop attack"
  • you press ESC
  • you change of zone
  • your target is dead

Combat is round based, and each round last around 1.6 seconds. On each round the attack is resolve and the result is displayed in the right-bottom corner of the target:

  • a cloud that means you failed to hit the target.
  • a shield that means you hitted the target but that you were unable to damage it.
  • a blood that means you hitted the target and damaged it. Also you will see a red number popping out of target, that the amount of damage done.

If you kill your target you will see a blue number popping out, that's your experience reward.
