Stendhal 1.46 - Getting with the Times

We're breaking the fourth wall in this release announcment and pulling back the curtain a tad to give you the details of a much updated and contemporary release. You won't find a lot of changes to the Stendhal world as we have been working to "get with the times". Instead you will be greeted with a modern and much improved client interface built for a variety of platforms such as web, Steam, mobile Android, and all your favorite desktop operating systems.

Much effort has been put in to adding touch input support to expand gameplay to mobile devices. The client now has a configurable on-screen joystick or direction pad to handle character movement while continuing to support pathfinding using clicks or touches to the ground. Object drag-and-drop was another important focus. In previous releases it was only possible using mouse input but now has been expanded to support touch enabled devices.

To aid in convenience for players using touch devices, we have added a "chat options" dialog window. It contains keywords to interact with NPCs instead of requiring to type everything out. Of course, being that Stendhal is heavily dependent on chat interactions with NPCs, some typing will still be required.

If you feel concerned that perhaps development is moving toward mobile only platforms, put your mind at ease. Stendhal will always be available for desktop systems. The web client is now our central interface and thanks to the versatility of JavaScript and web applications, not only is it playable in all major web browsers, it also serves as the core of our new Android client and future dedicated desktop clients. So the choice is yours of how you want to play, whether installed as a downloadable app or directly in your desktop or mobile browser.

Getting back to the world of Stendhal, we want to mention that the ferry service has received a small upgrade. Captain Brownbeard invested in a fog horn. Listen for its low blare announcing its arrival to port.
