Stendhal is still under heavy development. This means that we constantly add new interesting features. For example in the past there was the simple rule "the faster the weapon, the better". This had the strange impact that a light knife was more suitable than a heavy sword to fight a huge dragon. So in 2008 we added a new property: "weight". Now heavy weapons are more suitable against huge monsters. Light weapons are still useful to fight small monsters. As usual we put information about "weight" into the release announcement and even added some NPCs in game to explain it. But a number of players totally ignored it and went right into big trouble. It took a couple of days until the word was spread and the situation improved.

The lesson we learned is: When we add such features we have to be very communicative about the impact.
Profligate camping by players was amongst factors which made us decide to improve the rules of combat in 2008. Although it brought many benefits such as much more interesting game play (choice of weapon depended on opponent, for example, so there was no longer one weapon which was the best to use in all cases) and a much fairer system, players resisted the changes. Those who read the explanations of the new system and how it affected the, adjusted quickly, but those who persisted in using one weapon and the same style of play, found the new system much harder and we received a lot of negative feedback. Gradually, players did adapt, the number of camping players dropped dramatically, but the average number of players online did not fall long term.
